Supply chain issues have impacted the availability of some medicines.

COVID has disrupted our lives in countless ways. Many of them have been resolved, but more are in progress. Problem with the supply chain is a persistent problem, and drugs like Adderall and Ozempic (a diabetes drug that has become popular as a weight loss aid) are just two of the drugs people have taken difficulty getting your hands on it lately.

What’s behind these drug shortages? The FDA lists various reasons, including manufacturing delays, quality issues and interruptions. Sometimes, they say, the problem is as simple as the wrong expiration date printed on the packaging, resulting in a recall. Other times, more dangerous issues are at play, such as a lack of sterility or the possibility of foreign bodies getting into the medicine (what they call “particles in the product”).

An increase in demand can be the cause of this particular problem.

In this case, the problem appears to be related to a continued increase in respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, which is concern across the countryby The New York Times. Medicines used to treat this disease are in high demand and pharmacies can be have trouble followingaccording to US News & World Report.

Although you may have heard of RSV as something that primarily affects infants and children, adults can catch the virus as well. “In adults and children, RSV usually causes mild symptoms like cough, runny nose, and fever,” says The New York Timesexplaining that premature babies, infants less than six months old, and people with chronic lung disease or congenital heart disease are most at risk of serious consequences from RSV.

The FDA lists this drug as “currently in short supply.”

Doctors typically prescribe amoxicillin to treat RSV, and it’s this drug that the FDA says could face supply issues. Amoxicillin oral solution, in particular, has just been added to their shortage list. This prescription, generally given to childrenperhaps harder to find in the prescribed strength, Erin FoxPharmD, senior director of pharmacy at University of Utah Health, told CNN.

“I think it’s going to be difficult for doctors and prescribers to give their patients a prescription that they can then fill, because pharmacies are going to have a variety of different dosages in stock, and you hate having that delay of go- returns, especially for an antibiotic, they usually want to start pretty quickly,” Fox explained. “So I think it’s going to be a frustrating shortage.”

Experts say there is no reason to panic.

If you, or your child, are given amoxicillin oral solution, don’t worry: Fox says you’ll still be able to get the drug one way or another. “My first piece of advice would be not to panic,” she told CNN. “There is still amoxicillin. It may need a quick prescription change.” She listed amoxicillin-clavulent and cefuroxime as particularly good alternatives for children.

In other potentially reassuring news, Walgreens told CNN they are not experiencing any amoxicillin supply issues, although CVS and Walmart did not say whether they are seeing a shortage of the drug. Customers to some CVS locations reported shortages of amoxicillin, and the company has previously acknowledged the drug was in short supply like some pharmacies.
