Louisiana doctor and nurse indicted for distributing prescription drugs

A federal grand jury has returned indictments against two medical professionals for unlawfully obtaining and distributing controlled substances.

Dr. Jeffrey L. Evans, Jr., 65, of Mansfield, La., and Debra E. Craig, 66, of Converse, La., were each indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday with unlawfully obtaining and distributing controlled substances.

Evans was a practicing physician in Mansfield and Craig served as an LPN at his medical clinic and was assigned to work with Evans.

The indictment alleges that between January 2, 2014 and March 9, 2022, Evans and Craig conspired together and with others to obtain hydrocodone and Adderall by fraud.

Evans was writing prescriptions for controlled substances to an anonymous person identified as “Individual 1” and his co-defendant Craig. According to the indictment, Individual 1 would fill the prescriptions at a local pharmacy and then provide the Adderall to Evans, who would share the hydrocodone with Individual 1.

The indictment also alleges that Craig would fill prescriptions at the local pharmacy using the name “Debbie Craig”.

It is alleged in nine counts in the indictment that Evans obtained controlled substances by fraud from December 2017 to August 2018. In addition, Evans and Craig have both been charged with five counts. of obtaining controlled substances by fraud between September 2020 and March. 2022.

The indictment also alleges that Evans dispensed controlled substances through prescriptions that were not issued for legitimate medical purposes between February 2018 and August 2018.

If convicted, Evans faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, 3 years of probation and a fine of up to $250,000. If convicted, Craig faces a sentence of up to 4 years in prison, 3 years of probation and a fine of up to $250,000.
