Letter: Say no to the DRUG ACT
Americans are struggling to afford the highest drug prices in the world. Now, at the behest of Big Pharma front groups, Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Marco Rubio introduced the DRUGS Act, a bill that would deprive millions of Americans like me of essential daily medicines.
I depend on online Canadian pharmacies to pay for my medications, which cost two or three times more in American pharmacies. If the Medicines Act is passed, the medications and savings I get from online Canadian pharmacies will no longer be available. The bill targets the safe and licensed international pharmacies that millions of Americans depend on for safe and affordable medications.
Big Pharma groups that support the DRUGS Act are shamelessly exploiting the opioid crisis to crack down on prescription importation. An endorser took $1 million from Purdue Pharma, the maker of the highly addictive opioid painkiller OxyContin. Special interests endorsing this legislation include the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies, the Partnership for Safe Medicines, and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. These organizations are funded by the biggest pharmaceutical companies: AstraZeneca, Merck, Pfizer and others, even the opioid drug producer Purdue.
Americans like me critically need access to affordable prescription drugs. Our representatives and senators should say no to the DRUG ACT.
