Framed warning

Wegovy has a framed warning. This is a serious warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Risk of thyroid cancer. Semaglutide, the active drug* in Wegovy, increased the risk of cancerous thyroid tumors in animal studies. It is not known whether this risk is also increased in humans.

Symptoms of a thyroid tumor can include:

Because of this risk, doctors generally won’t prescribe Wegovy if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of thyroid cancer).

Doctors also usually don’t prescribe Wegovy if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. This is a genetic (inherited) disorder of the endocrine system that can cause thyroid cancer.

* An active drug is the ingredient that makes a drug work.

What might help

Call your doctor right away if you notice any symptoms of a thyroid tumor while using Wegovy. They will examine you and likely recommend lab tests to assess your symptoms. They will determine if it is safe for you to continue using Wegovy.

Nausea

Nausea was the most commonly reported side effect in Wegovy’s study. studies.

Nausea may go away over time as you continue to use Wegovy. In studies, it was rare for people to stop taking the drug due to nausea.

Injecting too much Wegovy can cause severe nausea. (See “What to do in case of overdose?” below for more.) But when Wegovy is used at the approved dosage, severe nausea is not an expected side effect.

What might help

Contact your doctor if you experience nausea that is bothersome or does not go away during treatment with Wegovy. They may suggest medication to reduce nausea. If your nausea still does not go away, they may recommend that you stop using Wegovy.

Constipation

Constipation is possible with the Wegovy treatment. This was one of the most common side effects reported by people taking Wegovy in studies. But no one in these studies stopped taking Wegovy because of constipation.

Constipation caused by Wegovy may go away on its own while you continue treatment.

What might help

Contact your doctor if you experience constipation while taking Wegovy, especially if it bothers you or does not go away. They may recommend medication to relieve your constipation. If that doesn’t help, they might recommend stopping Wegovy treatment.

Allergic reaction

Some people may have an allergic reaction to Wegovy. No allergic reactions have been reported in studies from Wegovy, but they have occurred since the drug was approved.

Symptoms of a mild allergic reaction may include:

  • itchy skin
  • itching
  • rinsing (temporary warmth, redness or deepening of skin color)

A more serious allergic reaction is rare but possible. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction can include swelling under the skin, usually on the eyelids, lips, hands or feet. They can also include swelling of the tongue, mouth, or throat, which can lead to difficulty breathing.

Call your doctor right away if you have an allergic reaction to Wegovy. But if you think you have a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.
